5 Benefits of taking a sewing class

When I was a kid I was interested in sewing. I made some clothes for my dolls, was able to sew on buttons, and sew rips at the seams. But, I always wanted to learn more. In high school I wanted to take Home Economics, but you could only take it in 9th and 10th grade and my schedule was full. I can't remember when I bought my first sewing machine, or even if we bought it or if was gifted to me. However, after my daughter started taking sewing classes, I really wanted to learn more. I finally decided to take an adult class at her sewing school. I loved it! There are so many benefits to taking a sewing class, but for this post, I am going to limited it to five:

  1. Creativity and Personal Expression: Sewing allows you to express yourself by designing and creating your own clothing, accessories, and home decor. You have the freedom to choose fabrics, patterns, and styles that match your personality and taste.

  2. Practical Skills: Learning how to sew is a practical skill that can be applied to various aspects of your life. From repairing torn clothing to making alterations and adjustments, you'll save money by extending the life of your garments.

  3. Emotional Well-being: Engaging in creative activities like sewing can be therapeutic and reduce stress levels (I literally read that in a book this morning!!).

  4. Gift-Giving: Handmade gifts often hold more sentimental value than store-bought ones. By knowing how to sew, you can create personalized gifts for family and friends, making special occasions even more meaningful.

  5. Problem-Solving and Patience: Sewing can be intricate and challenging at times, but it teaches you patience and problem-solving skills. You'll learn to follow instructions, troubleshoot issues, and persist through difficulties. (YouTube can help here!)

One thought that has recently struck me since we started our own sewing business is this: Creativity sparks creativity. I have been inspired by the students who have come through the camps. I would never have dreamed of doing some things they way they do, but it has challenged me to think outside the box, and it has sparked my creative juices. Maybe that should have been one of the benefits: your creativity will be sparked by the creativity of those around you 😀
